How it works

We all know that opiates and methamphetamines are taking a toll on our community’s resources, in addition to hurting our children and loved ones. One of the greatest ways to combat this addiction issue is through Prevention Education. In October 2018, the coalition was awarded a federal grant for the sole purpose of youth prevention and community outreach. Our goal is to prevent our young people from ever considering the idea of experimenting with alcohol and illegal substances. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control shows that when someone is addicted to alcohol they are 2 times more likely to become addicted to heroin. When addicted to marijuana, they are 3 times more likely to become addicted to heroin. That is why we work so hard to prevent experimenting by our youth.

We have implemented UNITE Clubs in all 5 public schools. the youth in these clubs have made a public pledge to stay alcohol and drug free, as well as learned how to be a positive influence in their community. They have been responsible for over 3,150 pounds of food donated to the local food pantry since 2016. They have also given support to veterans, younger students, and the elderly, to name a few.

Another focus of the coalition is education for our community. We work to help people understand that addiction does not discriminate. It affects us all, and because of this, we must all work together to make a change and save lives. We are “Uniting Wolfe Countians against drugs towards a safer, brighter future” with every action we take.
